THE BOX

Back at school. Back inside the box. After ten minutes I miss the beach already. O for the music of the waves. My concentration is shot to pieces. I can’t listen to what the teacher is saying. I’m bored. As I pan around me, I observe that my classmates are just as bored as me. Some are doodling in their notebooks; some daydreaming; some quietly chatting with their neighbors.

But I must persevere. This is the real world. The world of boxes.

I ponder about my future—since I’ve decided to have a future. Now I gotta figure out what to do. I don’t know if I can work in a box for the rest of my life. But at the same time I know physical work is not for me either. I want to think, to philosophize, and to be free to do whatever I please. There aren’t too many jobs like that. How I hate this world of boxes. I wish people were more laid-back, easygoing, more philosophical. But the world has turned into a giant Olympic Games, and everybody has to scuttle faster and faster and smash more and more records. Slowing down is not an option. We have to be faster than time. Enough already!

Be slow. Go slow. Slow down. Take it easy. I’m a snail. I’m a turtle. Relax. Take an hour off to contemplate a flower. Less is better. Small is fine. I don’t want any fries, thanks. There’s enough for everybody. War is stupid, communication is smarter. I’m a slug for peace. Wars should be fought with paint bombs. Politicians should wear clown suits. I am the grass. I am the sky. Silence. Zzzz …

“Wake up, Matt.”

I open my eyes. My teacher is glaring at me.

Joker jumps up and dances and sings. The students throw things at him, but he persists. Joker picks up an electric guitar and he strums, and out comes the most loudest, scariest, beautifulest sounds ever. He struts and bounds and leaps, and the students stand up and go crazy, cheering and stamping their feet.

“I’m going to be an artist,” I blurt out to my teacher.

“Thanks for sharing that with us, Matt,” he replies sarcastically.

The whole class snickers and laughs at me.

I don’t care. I’m a man with a mission: Art!
